This year was the 15th Southpac Truckers & Loggers Fishing Tournament 2018 held in the Bay of Islands in March and hosted by the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club.
42 teams and over 160 anglers registered for this year’s tournament making it one of the biggest yet, with participants coming from all over New Zealand.
While the weather forecast predicted rain very little eventuated and the winds stayed moderate so fishing conditions were great and a good number of fish were caught in all categories with Tuna being the only species where all prizes were not claimed.
Fishing started at 7.00am on Thursday 22nd March and the first marlin was tagged by Greg Haliday on Back in Black at 10.15am.
Around about the same time Craig Stokes on Wild Blue hooked up on a blue marlin that he fought for almost 5 hours before landing it.
It was weighed in that evening at Whangaroa and came in at 213.2kgs going on to win heaviest marlin of the tournament.
